This Halloween midterm, Castlecomer Discovery Park is the place to be! Join us for three thrilling days packed with adventure, games, and spooky fun in the great outdoors. With exciting age-appropriate activities, it’s the perfect way for kids to make friends, build confidence, and enjoy an unforgettable midterm break.

Join professional artists from the Butler Gallery Artists Panel on a 2-Day Children's Autumn Art Camp at Butler Gallery.
Daily activities will include guided visits to Butler Gallery's Exhibition and Collection galleries and art-making sessions in our Learning Centre. Children will be introduced to a variety of art making skills including working with pencils, oil pastels, paint and soft sculpture.
This is a fun and dynamic children's autumn art camp lead by professional artists.

Our interactive display will feature traditional tools, cutlery, foodstuffs, and quern stones—used for grinding grains by hand, just as our ancestors did. Gather around our fire pit to help shape and cook simple flatbreads, made the old-fashioned way.

Focusing on a favourite from Butler Gallery’s permanent collection, High Court of Justice by Mildred Anne Butler, Artist Rachel Burke will guide you through the creation of your own version of the work.
Crows, rooks and ravens appear regularly in Butler’s work and she kept many taxidermy pieces to ensure her depictions were anatomically correct. During the workshop we will explore and discuss this approach as well as Butler’s humorous use of birds in her work.

Step back in time to 1324 and uncover the chilling tale of Ireland's first Witchcraft Trial. Dame Alice Kyteler was the first woman to be condemned for witchcraft in Ireland. Alice, was tried and convicted of heresy but, being a very wealthy woman, was rumoured to have escaped Ireland. Her maid Petronella de Meath was not so fortunate and confessed to crimes of heresy after she was tortured, found guilty and was the first person in Ireland executed for witchcraft in Kilkenny on the 3rd of November 1324.
Candlelit Tales was founded by sibling storytellers Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. Their enthusiasm and expertise drives the rhythm of the storytelling, weaving through the tale and sweeping the listener away.
A chance to warm yourself by flame and good company, as Seanchaí Eimear Burke and Musician Conor Graham regale the audience with traditional stories, songs and folklore around the theme of Samhain, or Halloween.
The Werewolves of Ossory brings the social deduction game of Werewolf to the historic setting of medieval Kilkenny. In the vein of The Traitors, players will be given a secret role at the beginning of each game. Some will be werewolves, some will be villagers, others will have special roles that will aid or hinder the investigation as the villagers try to root out the killers before they are consumed one-by-one. Paranoia and scandal will run rampant, and only the most cold-blooded liars, the most unrelenting sleuths, and the most haplessly lucky will survive.
Dr. Susan Hood, Dr. John Gillis, and Timothy O’Neill will join us at St. Canice’s Cathedral, for an illuminating panel discussion on the Red Book of Ossory and the making of the facsimile. With the generous support of the RCB, the making of a facsimile of four pages of the manuscript is currently underway. Hood, Gillis and O’Neill will discuss the development of this project, the authentic techniques and appropriate materials used, along with the precision and accuracy needed to carry out a project of this scale.

St Canice’s Cathedral is home to stained-glass windows by both Alfred E. Child and Harry Clarke Studios. Between these makers, however, looms the ghostly figure of Harry Clarke (1889-1931) himself, who had been taught by Child and whose stained-glass business operated long after his early death. He was also a celebrated book illustrator, and his work animates and enriches the writings of Hans Christian Andersen and Edgar Allan Poe as well as Ireland’s Memorial Records, 1914-1918. In this talk, Dr Michael Waldron (Curator of Collections & Special Projects at Crawford Art Gallery, Cork) explores the creative force of Clarke’s often dark and daring imagination in his pursuit of a new ethereal and carnal language.
